With the start of a new year and a new season of the FIH Hockey Pro League, we are pleased to announce the recipient of the Poligras Magic Skill Award for the 2021-22 Season, as chosen by hockey fans across the globe.
Fans cast their votes for the FIH Global Supplier Polytan Moment of the Year Award between October 10th and 16th. From Tom Sorsby’s stunning goal line save to Tom Boon’s spectacular deflection goal with his back to the goal, six remarkable flashes of brilliance graced the grass during the intensely contested 2021-22 season of the league and made the shortlist for the Poligras Magic Skill Award.
Maria José Granatto
But there could be only one winner, and that honor goes to Argentina’s Mara José Granatto for her incredible magic with the stick in their game versus England and the Poligras Magic Skill Award. She dribbled past six opponents in a crowded area and then chipped the ball over the charging goalkeeper to colleague Julieta Jankunas, who had a wide open net to tap the ball into.
While Granatto’s goal was undeniably magnificent, Belén Iglesias of Spain scored an equally impressive goal against India by taking two touches with her back to the goal, lifting the ball on to her stick, and looping it over the keeper and defenders, exactly into the top corner of the goal. There was just one percent between first and second place in this race.
Poligras Magic Skill Award
After helping Argentina win their first FIH Hockey Pro League championship in 2021-22 and then winning silver at the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup in Spain and the Netherlands in 2022, where she was also named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, Mara José Granatto can now add the success at the Poligras Magic Skill Award to her list of accolades.
